Berlioz, Bruch & Brahms – a matiné with Simon Crawford-Phillips

Welcome to a concert guaranteed to dispel the autumn gloom, with three ’big B’s’. We begin with Berlioz, and the energetic Roman Carneval Overture, before one of the orchestra’s most talented violinists and its youngest member, Axel Drougge, joins us on stage for Bruch’s Violin Concerto. After the interval we sink into the warm embrace of Johannes Brahms, and his much-loved Symphony No.4.

For this concert, Orkestern Filialen is delighted to welcome back one of its favourite conductors – pianist, festival director and creative programmer as well as maestro extraordinaire. As a chamber musician, Simon collaborates regularly with such artiests as Daniel Hope, Lawrence Power, Roderick Williams and Anne Sofie von Otter. His own ensembles include The Kungsbacka Piano Trio and Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble. He is the Artistic Director of the Change Music Festival and the Västerås Music Festival and is principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Västerås Sinfonietta. Simon last appeared with Orkestern Filialen when we performed The Rite of Spring in May 2023.

The soloist for Bruch violin concerto is 17-year-old Axel Drougge. He began studying the violin at the age of six and went on to be tutored by Tobias Andersson, Joel Nyman and Jörgen Svensson. A pupil atNordiska Musikgymnasiet, Axel now studies with Tale Olsson. He was awarded first prize at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatoriums Juniorkonkurrence in 2020, 2021 and 2022, was invited to participate at Kallkursen in 2019 and 2020, and at Stråklandslaget in Falun, Sweden, in 2021 and 2022. In 2024, Axel was awarded a youth scholarship from The Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Axel has been a member of Orkestern Filialen since 2022.
